The Heros Journey: Ways To Rejuvenate Your Spirit

By Sandra Fisher

Spirituality is essential for many reasons. It has been shown that those with higher levels of spiritual connections are happier and healthier overall. This is inline with the more recent trend in the medical sciences to focus on both body and mind health for healing. If you are feeling spiritually empty or lacking in the more liminal elements of your life, you may get something out of going on the heros journey.

If you are constantly stressed out, and find you do not have the space, or the time in your home to practice your spirituality and enhance your sense of connectedness to the universe, a spiritual retreat may be just the answer you are looking for. Some people find their purpose through creativity, others through nature. Commonly, many men and women gain a great deal of spiritual fulfillment from retreats that incorporate both yoga and healthy diets. Whatever you are searching for, there is a retreat out there for you.

Spirituality is often defined as feeling that life is greater than you are, and having purpose in life. For people involved in the creative arts, life is most meaningful when their creativity is at its optimum. Since artists often find it difficult to concentrate in the bustling noises of the city, they may choose retreats as a way of either breaking through a creative block, or to finish their masterpiece. Many creative retreats exist. The purpose of them is for you, the artist, to spend your day with like-minded people either drawing, writing, or painting the whole day. Then you receive constructive feedback about your work. After a two-to-four week stint in the tropics of Costa Rica, or the deserts of Arizona, many come back with renewed energy and belief in their purpose and ability as an artist. This is a spiritually uplifting point in the lives of many artists, both aspiring and accomplished.

For some, the peace and serenity found in the practice of relaxation, meditation, and yoga is the ultimate spirit refresher. It is for this reason that yoga retreats abound. Not only are they widely available in the US, but Thailand and India are popular locations for these retreats too. Here you will have days, weeks, or even months to practice body strengthening and energizing yoga, eat healthy foods, and spend hours in meditation and relaxation. The focus you will gain from these retreats will ensure that you come to the realisation of what is important in life and reconnect with your sense of meaning in life.

Do you spend your whole day surrounded by people, working a stressful job, and then coming home to a noisy environment? It is easy to lose yourself in all of this chaos. This has lead to an increasing interest in solitude retreats. They basically are exactly what the title says - a retreat where you spend most, or even all of your time alone. No cell phones, emails, internet, or other people to bother you. Perhaps the idea of not speaking and basically being a hermit may not immediately appeal to you. However, it could give you the time you need to focus on yourself. Your dreams and aspirations may have gotten lost in the busy daily life you lead. To find your purpose and be true to yourself requires time for contemplation. Solitude retreats are the best way to accomplish this.

Another type of retreat gaining in popularity are health retreats. Given that doctors now acknowledge there is a strong mind-body connection, it is no surprise that a healthier body leads to better wellbeing and less stress. It also results in higher levels of happiness. This can only promote spirituality as when you are happier about your life, you feel you have more purpose. Health retreats have the primary focus of diet. They encourage full body detoxes which are accomplished by administering juice diets, vegetarian diets, and probiotic foods. As you lose all those toxins which are clogging up vital energy paths in your body, and generally making you feel sluggish, you feel lighter, better, and healthier. These retreats are really worth a try if junk food has become your staple recently.

The kinds of retreats available out there are endless. There are relationship retreats, health retreats, nature retreats and more. Whether you want to focus on improving your marriage, your health, or just find some quiet time, there is a retreat for you.

It is clear that whichever retreat you choose to go on, there is a spiritual value to be gained. You can connect with the universe through creativity, or up your life satisfaction ratio by improving your diet. Perhaps you simply need some peace and quiet. The common thread is that you will find purpose and meaning in life. This will lead to greater spiritual wellbeing and teach you skills you can draw from when your spirituality is feeling a little lost.
