By George Dodson

Before deciding on a new job, you have to set your own goals. While it may be significant for you to improve your individual performance, you should not forget the importance of maximizing the performance of the company too. Making sure those around you are successful will help you succeed.

We always need to set our performance goals within the purview of the business and management objectives. While trying to set goals from our employment's point of view, we need to examine what are the goals that the company or the management is vying for. The company also may have done their homework to set individual performance goals for their employees and you need to consider this when looking for the job.

After all, you are working for your employers and it makes sense that you value your employer's goals and targets. This means that your individual performance goals has to be with the aim to improve the performance of the company to enable it to achieve the goals sent by the company.

While we plan to set our goals while searching for suitable jobs, many of us are tempted to make a common misconception. This misconception underlines the importance of appraisal to evaluate our performance on an individual basis but not on the basis of the entire work unit. Normally the performance evaluation of an employee is done on an annual basis. This means that the supervisors and managers normally assess the performance of their subordinates annually. There are various types of formats used by the management for this annual assessment. Though this is a smooth process, it is sometimes possible that the performance of an employee is not assessed properly. These annual appraisals of the employers should be the basis when we set our performance goals.

While these performance appraisals are of significance, those are not the only aspect you should work at. Many times, managers fail to focus on the vital points of your performance and merely follow the pointers mentioned in the appraisal form. If you want to improve performance, and want to know about how to set goals while looking for employment, don't look back on your past performance. Once in a while you'll have problem because of events outside your control. Hence the only way to improve your achievements would be to look forward and plan your goals.

So if you are working, but want a new job, set goals like submitting 5 employment applications per day. Try to meet at least 1 new person in your company or field. You can use those contacts to find new jobs. You can also keep abreast of the developments by reading at least one article or a report in a day. All of these will help you improved your chances at the job hunt.
