Wellness at Work

By Sienna Nalin

Employers are starting to offer benefit packages that incorporate wellness because they know if a person is in a good state of mind, work will get done. Not just that, many businesses are aware that health is important, so why not offer something of such. If I were you I would take advantage of such packages.

What are wellness programs and why do many organizations offer them to their employees? Traditional wellness programs include nutrition and weight control, smoking cessation, fitness and stress reduction. Companies have found that these programs provide a significant return on investment, for the employer, the employee and their families.

Many company's offer bonuses for employees that reach wellness goals such as Johnson & Johnson who reward their overweight employees who reduce their body mass by a certain percent. These programs also cut down on healthcare cost because individuals are on a path to becoming healthy. These programs not only help the employees, but the companies also make a profit.

Interestingly, many organizations are turning to an old Buddhist tradition called mindfulness as a path toward stress reduction. Our modern world is filled with distractions - gadgets, electronics, texting, emails, calls - which almost seek instantaneous responses and multiple demands for our attention. Workers feel compelled to multitask. Mindfulness is a state of open, active and nonjudgmental attentiveness to the present. It's an awareness of moment to moment experiences. Companies such as Google, Target and General Mills are offering courses in meditation and mindfulness to their employees.

Good leaders and employees must become more attentive and calm through wellness in order to make good decisions that they will not regret later. When under stress, one sometimes makes decisions that are not good because they are not thinking clearly.

Being mindful embodies enjoying and watching how you breath so that you now to slow down and take time to fully think things out. Some people even calm down just by listening to music in which it helps their thought process. I know that works for me a lot. While writing this article I am listening to music to focus all my thoughts. Good wellness programs will essentially better and employee in all aspects. As mentioned before when an employee sees that their employers cares about their wellbeing, they feel much better.
