By Eric Wright

Codependency is very common. People will often see a spouse as being very controlling or protective. They may just accept this. However, it is not healthy living in this way. Often, it can lead to divorce. It is important to realize and to look into codependency counseling CO before it can become even worse.

However, there are times when it can seem that there is an element of control. When this begins to take over one's life, it is necessary to talk about it. Therapists are equipped with the skills to deal with this type of a relationship. Generally, there is a background which leads to the the situation. For example, it can be an adult who has grown up in dysfunctional environment. Abuse can lead to people wanting to be in control and pleasing others.

A parent who has a codependent relationship with their can break them down. It can lead to control and unhappiness. The child doesn't learn about independence. A codependent person will go as far as to block their feelings and emotions out in order to make others happy.

A person who is codependent will not focus on themselves because everything relates to those who that they care about. They may want to save those around them, even though family members are capable of taking care of themselves. It can lead to further complications within the family structure.

They also don't realize that not everyone has parents like they did. It is something that they need to deal with first and foremost. If one doesn't look into the dysfunctional backgrounds or the abusive situations in which a person came from, there will always be problems in the future.

The more they help others, and neglect themselves, the easier it is to forget previous experiences. Their self esteem and level of confidence improves as they are praised by those around them. It almost becomes an obsession, but they don't realize how much damage they are doing to themselves and their family and friends.

It is important to look at the symptoms. Some parents or spouses are protective, but when this goes to the extreme where they feel they need to keep watch on them all of the time, it is necessary to look into counseling. The individual has to realize that they can't always be there to rescue the person from a situation. A child, for example who is involved in a relationship like this won't learn from their mistakes because the parent is always running in and rescuing them.

It is important that other members of the family watch out for a person who seems to have got to the point where they are obsessed with a particular person. Usually, they will have a low self esteem. They are ashamed of themselves. They also don't have good boundaries. This is very common. Their first thought is to help another person. They won't say no, and therefore they will be neglecting their own needs.
