By Patricia Walker

Veterans are happy to return to their families and friends after a gruelling time out on the battlefield. But soon enough they begin to feel the effects of what took place over there. It begins to hit them in them a psychological way because of the trauma which they were exposed to. This is when mental health help for veterans MN is so useful.

There has been a lot of research been performed since these days. People are aware of what goes on with the soldier who returns back to reality to their families and friends. Many people who are close to them don't realize what is happening with their emotional state of mind. They may not understand the extent of the depression and anxiety that they go through.

Often, the family does not know how to support someone like this. The veteran can't explain how they are feeling. Support is most important, and yet families just want the individual to feel that they are loved, but this is difficult when they have so much going on in their mind. Families need to know more about how they can support them. This is where counseling can be helping.

Besides depression and anxiety, they can get flashbacks which are often the cause of loud noises. They may hear something loud, such as a hooter, and think it is a helicopter which draws them back to a particular situation. It can be crippling because it seems so real. When this happens often, they can begin to have panic attacks and they will want to stay at home and isolate themselves.

Most of this is related to PTSD. Fortunately, there are specialized counsellors who help veterans with these sorts of situations. It is important to look for counseling, otherwise individuals will turn to alcohol and drugs or other addictions because this helps ease the pain. A counselor will help a person like this talk about what is happening in their life.

In most cases it is essential as a lot of veterans have committed suicide. These facilities were not provided for veterans in Vietnam. There are now many homes for them all over the country. They have never dealt with what happened to them. Families need to encourage the individual to take advantage of these facilities.

It is worrying for spouses when their husband returns because they not only have this to deal with, but there is also the lack of finances which is a problem. A person like this is not fit to go back into the work place. Most of the time they won'T be qualified to do anything else. They will continue to eat into their savings.

Families should consider going to some of the counseling sessions with the veteran. This can be helpful for them to get to know more about what their loved one is going through. It can include some of the aggression and the change in mood which can be frustrating at times. The support is very important.
