There are a lot of people, some of them living in the woods and others living right down the street from you. They have decided, for one reason or another, that they have to get away from the rest of the people and be by themselves. They may think the government is out to get them, so they store away a lot of water, food, first aid supplies as well as guns and ammunition. These people have decided to group together and others call them preppers groups.
In some cases, it does not take the suggestion the government is after them. It might only be a relatively large scale natural disaster to get the individuals to group together. It might only be a small number of people, such as family. It might also be a group as large as a neighborhood or one that is related only by their love of bowling or hunting.
The planning that goes into many of these groups can amaze an outsider, if they are ever to see it. Many of them will set up fairly elaborate systems of getting water into their compound or structure. Literally all of them will have gas powered generators. All of them will have bottled water if they do not have anything else. This water will be sanitized by certain chemicals to allow it to be stored for long periods.
The food they store away will be high in carbohydrates and protean so their bodies are fueled, even if their taste buds are not totally satisfied. There are a lot of dehydrated foods available that can be stored for long periods of time and still support an active lifestyle they believe they are in for. This expected lifestyle might include running, hiding and, if necessary, fighting to stay safe and alive.
After each group gets established, it is difficult, if not impossible, to get invited in. They are preparing for some coming very big thing. They do not necessarily believe they are the only ones to know about it, however, they believe that they are there for themselves. They believe everyone else should maintain their own group, separate from them.
Many of these groups are also second amendment believers, which is, certainly, not against the law. Some of them will take this too far. Those will be militant to a large degree and will defend themselves, often, at danger of being discovered and caught. These are those who believe, honestly, that the government wants to confiscate guns and ammunition.
Many others are not as militant as those angry ones are. These will be more open about their dealing with others, however, do not expect them to be welcoming of strangers. The reason for them being apart from others is the distrust that can be generated because of outside circumstances in which they find themselves.
In short, when preppers discover disasters, whether natural or man made, they come together in a bond of preparation for the bad thing coming. They are not comfortable around other people who do not share their single minded attention to something that may be real or imagined. They combine resources, materials and knowledge hoping they have enough of whatever it takes to survive for a few more days, weeks, or months.
