Learning How To Release Emotion

By Deborah Moore

Releasing emotion is a necessary part of life. One needs to be able to express oneself in order to say how they are feeling. It could be anger or fear, but to get to the next stage, one has to be vulnerable. Of course, this is never easy when you don't know how to release emotion and you have never been taught how to do this.

Often, parents have taught their kids to be strong and not to cry. They may have been taught to do the same things in their own childhood. This is why they use these types of parenting skills. It is difficult for them to show emotions of their own because of the way in which they have been brought up.

Often, they will turn to alcohol. This may be their way of dealing with their anger. However, other people will continue to simply carry a lot of these feelings around like a burden. They become heavy in doing so. It is a heavy weight to carry around with you. There may be people who find an outlet which can come in the form of a creative activity.

However, this is not enough. You still need to know how to express your feelings. You can't go and pick up a paint brush every time you feel yourself becoming upset and remembering that you are not allowed to feel this way. Eventually, when you do go to therapy, you discover it is not only the psychological issues that you get rid of, but also the physical pain.

People who struggle with feelings and carry them around on their shoulders will struggle with psychological issues, but they will often struggle with psychosomatic disorders as well. It can relate to aches and pains or nausea. Some people will have a lot of stomach aches or headaches. This can continue for many years until you deal with the underlying issue.

Of course, this can be a long process during therapy. It will obviously depend on the underlying issue. Some people struggle with something such as abuse. They may be suffering from PTSD. They may have been suffering from recent triggers which have led to flashbacks. There is obviously a lot to deal with.

People find that focusing on the moment and being distracted from past experiences can be very helpful. This will include meditation and mindfulness. There are apps available which help people to stay calm should they have a bad experience when out and about. This is a convenient way which makes you feel more confident in which you are going to get over the challenge.

Even after therapy, there will still be obstacles that you will have to face in your life. Children who have been abused in the past, will be scarred, but therapy will at least have helped them to cope with various situations that come their way. You will get to know yourself and you will also listen to your body which will make you feel confident and self aware as well.
