The Advantages Of Ventura County Group Counseling

By Robert Wagner

There are people that benefit from different types of counseling. Some people will have trust issues and will need individualized counseling. Other people are more extroverted and will benefit from working in a group with people who are struggling in the same way. Ventura County group counseling is a fine example of this.

Groups are led by a psychologist who knows how to deal with individuals in this type of a situation. Some sessions are more casual and others are traditional are properly organized. An example of this is the twelve step program for individuals with drug and alcohol addictions. This will sometimes apply to other addictions as well.

More recently, a specialized therapist deals with dialectical behaviour therapy. This is something that you have to be qualified to do. It was originally designed for the borderline personality disorder client. They react a lot and are very sensitive. During this time, the person will learn how to cope at these times, which can be different for everyone. They will learn more about the trigger and this helps them.

However, people shouldn't feel that they are pushed or forced to say something. It does help people to get to that point where they feel more comfortable expressing themselves within a group. This can be ideal for the person with social anxiety disorder, for example. It can be nerve wracking at first. However, soon the person realizes that they are all in the same boat.

A therapist has the experience, the knowledge, wisdom, understanding and qualifications. However, most of the time, they would not have been in that same place. They wouldn't have the personal experience which is what the client is often looking for. This is what you are able to get out of a group experience. You find out a lot more from what others have been through.

Some of these sessions require much patience. However, the difference to that of individual counseling is that you have other members to turn to who will be going through the same thing. They may also be struggling with frustrations because of the lack of patience. This is where people find other group members helpful because of an outside connection in a more informal sense of the world.

The psychologist would like to give everyone a chance to say something. However, at the same time, they don't want to push the individual. They need to maintain the balance. There may be people who want to take over as well and this is something to keep in mind when handling groups as well.

There are many other groups that have popped up which support people with addictions. They will also provide you with a sponsor which is very helpful. This is like a mentor that you can turn to at any time. Often, a person who is recovering from an addiction will be vulnerable and will need this type support, especially when they have come out of a rehab. The fact that you can go to a meeting every night in different areas is something to marvel over.
