Lively Delivery With Funny Sermon Illustrations

By Andrea Davidson

Funny sermon illustrations are used by successful preachers to create a context for the reading of the day. They come with flexibility allowing you to use them either at the beginning, somewhere in between or to make a conclusion. Their effect has been noted by analysts who continue to say that they have a longer lasting effect than a plain session on the scripture.

They come in different categories to cover for the needs of each group of faithful. Some are perfect for children, adults, elderly, mothers, fathers, etc. Others can be used across generations and still have the expected impact. It is important for pastors to ensure that they deliver the right illustration to the right people and at the right time. Some are perfect for Christmas while others are fit for Easter.

The topics handled vary and determine how effective it will be. For instance, a story is told about a man who found his son sited in front of the house, with his head hoisted using his hands. He thought to himself what could be wrong with his son before asking. The son looked at him, and in a low tone told him that he too was fed up with his wife. This is an illustration that would fit a marriage scenario.

Another story is told of a man who only attended church once a year during Christmas. The pastor would stand by the door and welcome the faithful telling them to join the army of the Lord. When his turn came, the pastor enquired why he only appeared at the church once a year. The man said that he was an ardent follower but was working for the secret service in the army of the lord and that is why the pastor could not see him often.

Another illustration used to teach people about paying attention in church says that a pastor always started his sermons with the words, The Lord Be With You. The congregation would answer back, And Also With You. This turned out to be a mechanical chorus. One day the microphone developed problems and the pastor said, There is Something Wrong with the Microphone. The congregation as usual said And Also With You.

On stages in the life of a person, a faithful comes to church during three important stages in life. They are baptism, wedding ceremony and when he is brought during burial. It is evident that people throw water at you on the first day and rice on the second. By the third day, they are too fed up and can only afford dirt.

The wife of a pastor returned home tired after long Christmas Eve and morning services. The husband could not understand since it was expected that he should be tired instead, for delivering five sermons. The wife was frank to say that it was she who had to listen through all of them.

Funny sermon illustrations will make homilies memorable and practical. Faithful can easily follow the flow during the session and have something to discuss after church. After all, the same verse can be given different meanings when the approach is altered through an illustration.
