Tips For Choosing Newly Published Christian Books

By Amanda Baird

Read newly published Christian books to educate, inspire, encourage, and entertain. There's a wealth of information out there, information on religion, spirituality, biblical history, morality, truth, evangelism, and Christian living. Before you read any Christian materials, fiction or non-fiction, pray for wisdom in your understanding. You will know you are reading truth if you "test all things; hold on to what is good" as instructed in 1 Thessalonians 5:21. This means to compare what you read with scripture straight from the Bible. The Bible should always win any argument.

Some people say the Bible is outdated, but it's still the number 1 best seller. It's available in a variety of translations for easy reading. Most newly published editions include topical articles and study notes to help with interpretation, context, and historical background. Students of the Bible can also purchase study guides for an in-depth look at each of the books of the Bible.

It's okay to enjoy reading while you're searching for spiritual truth and growth. Take a look at the fiction section. There's several novels available that deal with bible stories. Authors carefully stick to the original script, adding possible dialogue and private thoughts to explore emotional context and complexity. Historical context is brought to life in biblical fiction. Other novels focus on characters attempting to live out their faith in a conflicted world. An allegory is a story or poem that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning. It's a modern day parable.

A summary or overview of the Old and New Testament is a good way to start any exploration into biblical studies. Read about the history of biblical times to gain a deeper and fuller understanding. For inspiration and encouragement read the personal testimonies of other Christians and converts, and biographies of the great evangelists, preachers, teachers, and martyrs of the faith. Reading stories about evangelists encourages believers to act on the great commission - to tell the world.

A devotional is an excellent way to keep your focus on God. It's been said that "The family that prays together stays together". You can find 365 day devotionals, 30 day editions, advent and Christmas, Lent and Easter booklets, devotional journals, teen devotionals, and kids devotionals. Use these resources to guide your family in biblical study and meditation. Use a devotional to start and end your day with prayer and meditation on the word of God.

Look for books in the theology section if you want an in-depth understanding of God and God's relationship and interaction with the world. Believers are told "to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you." (1 Peter 3:15). To present a reasoned defense of your faith, look for books on apologetics.

It's easy to find newly published Christian books. Find them at any Christian bookstore, secular bookstore, and most large department stores, drugstores, and warehouse stores. Buy them online. Visit the local library. Visit your local church and ask if they have a lending library.

Check online venues and Christian newsletters and magazines, for reviews, advertisements, and lists of top selling, newly published Christian books. Bookstores usually have a special section for new editions. Church study groups often focus a study series on recently published materials. Or choose something written by your favorite pastor, teacher, or evangelist.
